The Pistoia Santa Trinità Altarpiece

In 1455, Pesellino began painting this altarpiece for the Confraternity of Priests of the Trinity, for their church in the Tuscan city of Pistoia. Following his premature death two years later, the painting was finished by Fra Filippo Lippi and his workshop. The main panel shows the Trinity, with God the Father supporting the crucified Christ and the dove of the Holy Spirit hovering between them. To the left are Saint Mamas, accompanied by three lions, and Saint James, patron saint of Pistoia carrying a pilgrim's staff. The bishop Saint Zeno and Saint Jerome, who wears a red cardinal's robe, stand to the right. The predella shows scenes from the lives of these four saints.
