Bold depictions of half-length figures playing a musical instrument were popular among Netherlandish followers of the Italian painter Caravaggio during the early 1620s. Ter Brugghen's painting shows Caravaggio's influence in the use of strong lighting and an up-close portrayal to heighten the intensity of the image.
