A Lady with a Fan
The fashionable dress and luxurious accessories of this unknown sitter suggest she is a woman of wealth. Looking out from behind a wooden parapet, her pose gives the illusion of depth, a device adopted by Bol from his master, Rembrandt. Recent cleaning of the painting has revealed a faint signature and date (1643) in the lower left corner, only visible under ultra-violet light.
