The Trinity and Mystic Pietà

The Virgin and Saint John stand in the tomb mourning the dead Christ. Behind is God the Father and the dove representing the Holy Spirit, who, with Christ, make up the Trinity. The picture was probably commissioned as an altarpiece for a Strasbourg church, for the family represented in miniature below.
