Margaret Gainsborough holding a Theorbo
This unfinished portrait of the artist's youngest daughter, Margaret (1751 1820), playing a theorbo (a kind of lute) unites two personal aspects of his life and career: his affection for his family and friends, and their shared passion for music. In its vigorous bravura manner, the portrait also shows a modern aspect to Gainsborough's portraiture.
