The Death of Actaeon

The hunter Actaeon accidentally saw Diana, goddess of the hunt, naked. She transformed him into a stag, and he was torn apart by his own hounds. Conceived for King Philip II of Spain in 1559, the picture was only finished toward the end of Titian's life. Its brushwork and dissolution of form is remarkably expressive, embodying the drama.
