Schmerzensmann zwischen zwei Engeln

Christ is touching the wound in his right side - the source of sacraments, from where he draws the Host (Lord's body), with blood from his wounds flowing into a chalice (Lord's blood). The believer is asked to understand the significance of Christ's sacrifice for the redemption of humankind, and to follow His example. The urgency of the image is even enhanced by the Latin text on the frame of the painting, frequently seen on liturgical paraphernalia. In translation it sounds as follows: "I suffer for thee, while thou art in sin, give it up for my sake I am the living bread descended from heaven...". The accentuated symbolism of the Eucharist is in accordance with the provenance of the work, for the painting comes from the Church of Our Lady before Týn in the Old Town of Prague, formerly the main Utraquist church in Prague.

Ikonografický typ představuje tzv. eucharistického Krista. Kristus se dotýká rány v pravém boku - pramenu svátostí, odkud vyjímá hostii (Tělo Páně), krev z jeho ran stéká do kalicha (Krev Páně). Věřící je vyzýván k pochopení významu Kristovy oběti při spáse lidstva a k následování Krista. Naléhavost obrazu umocňuje latinský text na rámu obrazu, častý i na liturgickém náčiní. V překladu zní: „Trpěl jsem pro tebe, zatímco hřešíš, ustaň pro mě, já jsem ten živý chléb, který sestoupil z nebe." Důraz na eucharistickou symboliku zcela odpovídá provenienci díla, neboť obraz pochází ze staroměstského kostela P. Marie před Týnem, někdejšího hlavního pražského utrakvistického chrámu.
