World Exhibitions
The optimism that the world could be controlled with technical and scientific methods becomes tangible in the world exhibitions of the 19th century. From the steam engine to the vase they presented a promising array of commodities. Art forms from all epochs and every corner of the globe were adapted. Industrial manufacturing, "substitute materials" such as molded glass instead of crystal or cast zinc instead of bronze made products with a "touch of class" accessible to large sections of the population. The world exhibitions showcased the achievements of the industrialized nations. Their prestige as world powers derived from their economic strength, which they extended with colonial expansion. The striving for power led to critical situations even before 1914.
