Der gestohlene Kuss

Als eines der wenigen hochvollendeten Werke, die Fragonard während seines ersten Italienaufenthalts malte, entstand das Gemälde zwischen 1756 und 1761. Es gehörte den Bailli de Bréteuil, die von Malta aus Botschafter in Rom waren. Während die Figurengruppe uns daran erinnert, dass Fragonard bei Boucher ausgebildet wurde, sind die Intensität, die Farbharmonien und die warme, dunkle Atmosphäre seine eigenen.

One of a few highly finished works painted by Fragonard during his first Italian sojourn, the canvas was painted between 1756 and 1761. It belonged to the Bailli de Bréteuil, who was ambassador to Rome from Malta. While the figure group reminds us that Fragonard was trained under Boucher, the intensity, the color harmonies, and the warm, dark atmosphere are his own.
