Als Sünderin, vielleicht eine Kurtisane, war Maria Magdalena eine Zeugin Christi, der auf die Freuden des Fleisches verzichtete, um ein Leben der Buße und Kontemplation zu führen. Sie wird mit einem Spiegel dargestellt, dem Symbol der Eitelkeit; ein Totenkopf, Symbol der Sterblichkeit; und eine Kerze, die wahrscheinlich für ihre spirituelle Erleuchtung steht. Der Stil von La Tour, der aus dem Herzogtum Lothringen in Ostfrankreich stammt, ist stark der caravaggesken Malerei verpflichtet. Der Kontrast von Kerzenlicht und Schatten, die reine Geometrie der Form und die meditative Stimmung prägen die Bilder, für die er berühmt ist.

A sinner, perhaps a courtesan, Mary Magdalen was a witness of Christ who renounced the pleasures of the flesh for a life of penance and contemplation. She is shown with a mirror, symbol of vanity; a skull, emblem of mortality; and a candle that probably stands for her spiritual enlightenment. The style of La Tour, a native of the duchy of Lorraine in eastern France, is much indebted to Caravaggesque painting. The contrast of candlelight and shadow, the pure geometry of form, and the meditative mood characterize the pictures for which he is famous.
