Hl. Franziskus in Ekstase

Der heilige Franziskus (1181/1182-1226), der eine Kapuzinertracht trägt, wird auf einem felsigen Abgrund als Silhouette vor dem Abendhimmel dargestellt. Er war bekanntermaßen dem gekreuzigten Christus ergeben und wird in einem Zustand der Ekstase dargestellt. Das offene Buch und der Totenkopf sind Symbole der Eitelkeiten der Welt und der Sterblichkeit. Castiglione verwendet eine vielfältige Technik, um den Übergang von der materiellen zur spirituellen Welt zu markieren. Das Bild wurde in Rom gemalt, wahrscheinlich als Altarbild, sein ursprünglicher Standort ist jedoch unbekannt.

Wearing a Capuchin habit, Saint Francis (1181/1182-1226) is shown on a rocky precipice, silhouetted against an evening sky. He was famously devoted to Christ crucified and is shown in a state of ecstasy. The open book and skull are symbols of the vanities of the world and mortality. Castiglione employs a richly varied technique to mark the transition from the material world to the spiritual. The picture was painted in Rome, probably as an altarpiece, though its original location is unknown.
