Joseph Ignaz Appiani (1706-1785) was painter to the court in Mainz and the founder of the academy of arts in the town. His sketch for the frescoed ceiling in the refectory of the Premonstratensian abbey at Obermarchtal shows a dramatically fore shortened Norbert of Xanten, founder of the Order. He holds a monstrance aloft in triumph while the heretical ambulant preacher Tanchelm, blinded by its light, falls down the steps.
