The composition of the Crucifixion is inspired by the woodcuts of the Large Passion Cycle by Albrecht Dürer. The delicate style of painting is underlined by the pathetic drama of the scene which emphasizes the Christ's sacrifice. The concept of the Eucharistic theory of Christ's blood as the "resource of all the blessings" is reflected in the figures of angels collecting Christ's blood in chalices. The panel was probably commissioned for the Church of SS Peter and Paul in Mělník, the dowry town of Bohemian Queens; the Church in this town was remodeled in the 1480s on costs of Johana of Rožmitál, the widow of the King George of Poděbrady.
