The Madonna originates in Vyšehrad, which together with the Prague Castle used to rank among the most significant royal and religious centres in Bohemia. The site was heavily plundered during the Hussite wars in the 15th century. Madonna of Vyšehrad is in terms of the Czech panel painting the oldest preserved example of the italian type of the Humble Madonna (Madonna dell'Umiltà), seated in the Garden of Eden on the green grass with flowers and feeding the Infant Jesus. The rays of Mary's halo are terminated with stars (twelve originally), which along with the crescent at her feet refer to the apocalyptic woman and the Assumption. The background of the panel was covered with metal casing which survived to these days and is decorated with impressions.
