Gebet des heiligen Bonaventura um die Wahl des neuen Papstes

Das Gemälde des spanischen Künstlers Zurbarán war für die dem heiligen Bonaventura gewidmete Kirche in Sevilla gemalt worden. Der Franziskanermönch hatte im 13. Jahrhundert eine lange Papstvakanz beendet, indem er - einer Engelsvision folgend - Gregor X. als Stellvertreter Gottes auf Erden vorschlug.

Starkes Helldunkel und eine dramatische Farbwahl prägen das Bild und verleihen ihm so große Intensität. Das den Engel umrahmende göttliche Licht strahlt auf den knieenden Bonaventura aus und beleuchtet effektvoll Hände, Gesicht und Ordensmantel. Das Rot der Tischdecke, auf der die Papstkrone präsentiert wird, findet seine Entsprechung in den intensiv farbigen Kardinalsgewändern im Hintergrund.

This painting by the Spanish artist Zurbarán was produced for the church of St Bonaventure in Seville. In the 13th century, this Franciscan monk had brought a long papal vacancy to an end when - prompted by a vision of an angel - he proposed Gregory X for the position of God's deputy on earth.

The painting is characterised by strong chiaroscuro effects and dramatic colours, which lend it exceptional intensity. The divine light surrounding the angel radiates onto the kneeling figure of Bonaventure, strikingly illuminating his hands, face and robe. The red of the tablecloth on which the papal tiara is presented corresponds to the intensive colour of the Cardinals' robes in the background.
