Herz legte das Gemälde am 8. Mai 1627 als Meister stück vor. Der Maler erscheint in Gestalt seines Namens patrons und in der Pose des Melancholikers. Mit dem Nachtbild steht Herz als einer der ersten deutschen Künstler in der Nachfolge Caravaggios (1571-1610).

Herz submitted the painting as his »masterpiece<< on May 8, 1627. The painter appears as his patron saint and in the pose of a melancholic. With this nocturnal picture Herz is one of the first German artists to follow in the tradition of Caravaggio (1571-1610).
