Die heutige Darstellung geht auf eine spätere Überarbeitung van Dycks zurück. Die Röntgenaufnahme zeigt noch die vor der Reise nach Italien entstandene Komposition: Ursprünglich stützte van Dyck seinen rechten Arm auf und führte die Hand locker zum Kinn. Die jetzige Haltung mit dem parallel zum unteren Bildrand gelegten Arm leitet sich von italienischen Vorbildern ab. Deshalb wurde vermutet, dass van Dyck das Gemälde nach seiner Rückkehr 1627 seinem in Italien entwickelten Stil anpasste und dabei auch die Ehrenkette einfügte, die ihm 1622 vom Herzog von Mantua verliehen worden war.

The depiction seen today is the result of Van Dyck's later reworking of an earlier picture. X-rays have revealed the composition created before his trip to Italy: originally, Van Dyck was leaning on his right arm, his hand nonchalantly motioning towards his chin. The present posture, with his arm shown parallel to the lower edge of the picture, is taken from Italian works that influenced the artist. For this reason it is assumed that Van Dyck adapted the painting after his return in 1627 to the style he had developed in Italy, adding the chain of honour he was given by the Duke of Mantua in 1622.
