This impressive ensemble of monumental figures of antique deities by Johann Baptist Straub was made at the request of the president of the Munich chamber of the court, Maximilian Emanuel Count of Toerring-Jettenbach, for his palace in Residenzstraße. Nine sculptures in total were erected in the vestibule and in the staircase in 1773. They are considered to be high points in the later production of this important rococo sculptor. The first strains of early neo-classicism can already be heard in their structural clarity. Today the goddess Ceres and a Roman emperor from this cycle stand in the museum's grand staircase.
