Nuremberg Sculpture in the Parler Period
Nuremberg art enjoyed a Golden Age in the last quarter of the 14th century. Important construction projects included the eastern choir of the Church of Saint Sebald, the Church of Our Lady and the Beautiful Fountain at the main market square.
The architecture and the related sculptural cycles are stylistically closely linked with the Parler family. This extensive family dynasty of master builders and sculptors from southern Germany influenced the artistic development of large areas of Central Europe. The term "Parler Period" for the late 14th century demonstrates their significance as an artistic avant garde.
Sculptures from this period are distinguished by a new sensibility for body mass and tangible volume. The full-bodied as well as precise physicality of the human figure and an extremely elegant flow of lines in the garments characterize their work. The decorative design of costume and hairstyle are striking. Sculpture defined by such features stands at the beginning of that phase of the Late Gothic known as the Beautiful or Soft Style.
